A Victorian mahogany cased compass, made in England c.1840 - 1870. This type of wooden cased compass was produced from around the end of the 18th century to the mid-19th century. The compass is in very good working order and finds North very well. With a paper compass card, delicate and finely balanced blued compass needle, with gilt North and South points, brass pivot and twin brass clasps. It has a transit lock, operated by a small pin and lever when the lid is closed.


Condition:

In very good condition, full working order, and just the normal signs of age and use. The wooden case, glass, compass card and needle are all in very good condition. The compass finds North very well and the transit lock is fully functional, locking the needle when the lid is closed.
